Ulrich Mertel

The search for the narrative of our time, the reflections of socio-political currents and the resulting question of human existence find expression through sculpture. The questioning is not strict, often slightly humorous, yet at its core it carries a serious message. The focus lies on the interplay of material and colour and on pushing the limits of what can be represented with the material used, clay, in size, form and filigree quality. My sculptures stand for themselves, acting in their own social environment; they are thus autonomous beings in their own world.
